Whilst it is a source of great debate why Cleopatra’s story has lived on long after her, one of the reasons is that it was extremely rare to have a female Queen in Egypt at that time. She was a strong female role model and she interacted with many of the important historical figures of the time giving as good as she got.

Egypt was in steady decline long before Cleopatra along with her father Ptolemy and brothers came to power. The rise of Rome and it’s expansionary mindset brought Cleopatra into contact with Julius Caesar. It was reputed that she had a liaison with the First Caesar and dictator of Rome. Her diplomacy allied to her charm and beauty allowed Egypt to remain largely autonomous from Rome.

When Julius Caesar was murdered, a struggle for power ensued with the main protagonists being Marc Antony and Augustus. Cleopatra was forced to choose a side and she sided with Mark Anthony. This was the prelude to an alliance and love affair between the two which ultimately ended in tragedy. This love affair is another factor in the appeal of Cleopatra. Indeed, the movie which starred Elizabeth Taylor was about this doomed relationship and co starred her on again off again husband Richard Burton in the role of Antony. The selection of the couple to play these historical figures seemed to be perfect casting.

Mark Antony was defeated by Augustus in battle and committed suicide. Cleopatra felt there was no way forward and also committed suicide, by allowing herself to be bitten by an Asp (Egyptian snake). Augustus became ruler of Egypt and promptly killed the Queen’s offspring and made Egypt a province of Rome.
